For Puppies 8 weeks - 5 months at start of class.
This class offers socialization/familiarization, handling for comfortable vet visits, and training time for puppies 8 weeks - 5 months old. Socialization/familiarization is not only about other dogs, exposure to other distractions such as noise and motion is included. Training time will consist of explanation, demonstration, and practice. Tricks, basic obedience and attention to handler will be emphasized. We will also go over any issues you may be having with your puppy!
Dog Training 1 - Manners, Control & Tricks
For dogs 6 months & older, who are not yet ready for Dog Training 2.
Teach your dog Sit, Down, Stay and Walking Politely. Learn how to help your dog become a family pet that is attentive and responsive. Impulse Control, Attention Training, Reliable Recalls and Problem solving will also be emphasized. To keep the class fun for the dogs, we will also train a new trick each week.
Class is 7 weeks; first week is orientation without your dog.
Dog Training 2 - Obedience & Canine Good Citizen
For dogs 10 months & older
This class teaches the 10 elements of the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Program. The basics include sit for petting, loose leash walking, sit, stay, down, come and staying with another person for a few minutes. Dogs learn to focus and perform with distractions of other dogs and people nearby.
Class is 7 weeks, first week is orientation without your dog.
What to Bring to Class:
A bag to carry all your training stuff in! A small tool bag works great!
Lots of soft, tiny, cut-up treats (Happy Howies work best, non-crumbly) 2-3 kinds of treats are recommended (Zukes Minis, String Cheese, Ziwi Peak are good, as are the treats from Trader Joe’s)
Treat pouch - one you can easily get your hand into
4' maximum leash
Flat collar or martingale collar
Harness, if recommended (see linked review about harnesses for selecting)
*Clickers are provided for group classes.
Sometimes weather or illness make it necessary to cancel a class. In the event class is cancelled due to weather, road conditions, or instructor illness, the schedule is extended by the appropriate number of classes. Notification of class cancellation is posted in this order:
Dog Training 3 - Therapy Dog Prep
For dogs 10 months and older at the start of class.
Prerequisite: Dog must have the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate.
Learn what it take to be a Therapy Dog Team with your best furry friend! Each class will be divided into presentations and practice as you and your dog develop a better understanding of this rewarding and challenging occupation. Training is tailored to pass the K9to5 National Therapy Dog Registry evaluations.
Bring your dog to all classes.
Note: The Senior Center is currently maintaining a waitlist for this class.
Therapy Dog Camp
This therapy dog camp occurs in the Summer, and is for children and teens. Children and their dogs learn about therapy dog responsibilities and what training is needed at class. At the end of class, teams are given the opportunity to take the Canine Good Citizen test and receive a certificate of participation for the Camp.
